The One with October 2022

“There is something about a fire on a dark night, a fire shared with others, that pulls the gloom right out of you.”

- William Kent Krueger, This Tender Land

There’s about one night a year that I willingly want to scare myself. Literally moments after I said something about *maybe* wanting to watch the Halloween movies, my Best Favorite was setting up the outdoor projector and starting a fire for spooky ambiance. It was perfect.

We enjoyed other fire nights with friends too, those pictured and those not pictured.

Family Book Club met in October to discuss The Book Thief. Those that joined in person brought a recipe from a favorite cook book and that plan played out deliciously. We had baked oatmeal, pull apart cheesy bread, broccoli cheese soup, and Snickerdoodle cookies.

Queenie seemed to enjoy spooky story time.

I devoured Tom/Draco’s book and recommend any Potterheads read it.

Many moons ago, 13 years to be exact, a friend and I gave ourselves temporary Hello Kitty tattoos. In October we made it permanent, but with lighthouses.

My lighthouse tattoo matches my sailboat tattoo and signifies passing my first coaching evaluation and being a guiding light to others. Also, I just really love Nickel Creek and their song “The Lighthouse’s Tale”.

My goddaughter was on the lighting crew for her school’s production of Willy Wonka and I went to see it. I love being a part of the entourage that cheers her on.

Powell Gardens in October was everything I wanted and needed it to be. In daylight hours I ventured the grounds with a friend and then for Halloween/birthday things for my Best Favorite, I ventured through the Dark Forest. The Dark Forest was spectacularly spooky- aesthetically pleasing to the eye and just the right amount of spooky.

Speaking of birthday things- my Best Favorite had a birthday in October. Along with visiting Powell Gardens, we also had brunch at Harvey’s at Union Station with my parents, coffee with friends at Front Range, dinner with family and friends at Mediterranean Market (where we also bought yums that we grilled later in the weekend), enjoyed cake, and sipped an assortment of foreign beers.

We continued the celebration to wish Remy a happy 14th birthday. He was spoiled with toys from friends, lots of treats, and many snuggly naps.

Last October I decided I wanted to watch all of Supernatural by Halloween of this year. With half an hour to spare, I met my goal. 15 seasons of the Winchesters in 12 months. I feel so accomplished and also a little lost. I won’t know what to do with all my time now that it’s done. Time to start it over, I guess!

It’s safe to say that we enjoyed spooky season around here!

Here’s to having the gloom pulled right out of you and eating pie like Dean Winchester.
