The One with the Silent Reading Party

9/11 hit quite differently for me this year. I always remember, but rarely do those memories keep me in bed all morning. Other than some gentle pup snuggles, silence was around me and in me as I entered into the day of remembrance.

Without much thought or consideration to the date, I was scheduled to host a silent reading party on this 9/11. A week or so before the silent reading party I was invited to read the book “The Beauty of What Remains” for a family book club with my mom and aunts. This was my choice for the silent reading party. How fitting it turned out to be to continue my day in silent connection and reflection with my guests.

“The Beauty of What Remains”, a book about how our greatest fear becomes our greatest gift, in only the first few chapters, helped me process what I had been wading through in my silence all that day. The author points out that “making peace with death is really about making peace with life.”

Even in my silent reading I was taken back to 9/11, “Sister Anne is with us. She flew in from San Diego last night. This is news, because she has not flown since 9/11; the flight went smoothly, and we have been catching up on all manner of things.”

She had made peace with life. To catch up. To laugh. It doesn’t mean forgetting. It means choosing to survive. To heal. And to live. It means finding the beauty in what remains.

“Most people die exactly the same way they live. This is sometimes terrible and sometimes beautiful, but it is almost always true.”

When thinking about how I want to die I must think about how I want to live and ask myself if I’m doing it. I want to live with intention and love. I want to live in connection and reflection. In creating the life I want it is also important to consider the Sabbath.

“Create your own kind of Sabbath in your heart and your life. Spend a seventh of your life gathered around the candlelit table, then snuggle beneath the covers. Stroll, listen, think, breathe, and relish your most sacred, finite, and beautiful blessing- time.”

The link below is the author of “The Beauty of What Remains” explaining the sentiment “May their memory be a blessing”.

May the memories of 9/11 be a blessing.

Here’s to finding the beauty of what remains.

The One with August 2021

August held an uncomfortable heat so I intentionally planned lots of water time. It started with a trip to the swim beach at a local lake with a friend. We went a tiny bit “extra” and made so many scrumptious snacks, bought floats and a shade tent, and managed to stay the day without getting sun burns. We had such a good time that we repeated the day again a couple of weeks later, only this time with sun burns. There were also some pool days thanks to a friend from work. It should be no surprise which of the following photos was taken after I got the above-mentioned sun burn.

Before school started I snuck in a day with my goddaughter. We shopped, got ice cream, loved on the pups, and listened to some retro music (Celine Dion and Backstreet Boys). Before I got her home we were already planning our next day out together. I’m already excited for whenever that day is.

My best favorite acquired tickets to a Sporting Kansas City game for his soccer team and I was lucky enough to go to the game with them.

My Auntie was in town visiting and we got to share some time together. It filled my soul to share some hugs, tears, and laughs with her while she was here. She was Remy’s first grandma so I made sure he got to visit her too- whether she liked it or not.

Missouri celebrated its bicentennial birthday in August. This was the perfect excuse to try an acquaintance’s new bakery in my hometown. If you’re local to KC you must visit Eclairs de la Lune on the Independence square. The macaron ice cream sandwich was especially tasty.

Having a night off together, my best favorite and I decided to get out of the house and go to an outdoor movie. We got a savory pizza from Square Pizza (also on the Independence square), ate in the parking lot as we waited for the movie, and got so full that we decided to go home and watch a movie instead. We took pillows and blankets outside to keep with the original plan of outdoor viewing and watched a movie in the backyard. We still got out of the house, got to snuggle our pups, and had a short commute after the movie. All in all, it was a winner of a night.

Obligatory pup photos.

This last photo isn’t a pup photo, but it is a photo of something one of the pups caught. It must have been a opossum playing opossum because minutes after this photo it had disappeared. Luckily, I decided to check on the pups the exact second Queenie spotted the critter and took off after it. The critter tried to waddle away, but Q was quick and carried him off until I started screaming. At that point, she laid the critter down and then Remy started circling him. I scooped Remy up and carried him inside, fearful for him to be the victim of a sneak attack. While it doesn’t sound like much, I was terrified and also a little surprised that the cops didn’t show up at my house because of all the screaming. It’s always something with these pups. Always.

August was busy with work, school, and business things for both me and my best favorite. I’ve now finished my business class and am giving myself a small respite before starting the next class. Thanks to a talented, and willing, cousin of mine I have a logo that I love. I still have a few things to finalize on my website but otherwise things are done and I’m ready for some official coaching clients. While I was busy with business things, my best favorite was helping me prepare for and pass the home inspection for my business license, cooking dinners, getting promoted at work, and studying for his own ventures. We are working hard to play hard and make the future ours.

Always with a book. Even at the lake. Although Remy loves lounging in the Love Sac he was not a huge fan of being forced into a photo op on National Book Lovers Day. Book tally for the year: 41

My mom had a birthday in August. To celebrate, we watched old Disney movies, played in the hose with the pups, shopped for shoes and home goods, and did not get a birthday cake from McDonald’s. We recently read online that McDonald’s has a secret menu and that you can get a birthday cake from there. We decided to give it a try but had no success. We did enjoy fries and chocolate shakes though.

One day I found myself near the Iron District around lunch time after a work meeting and decided to treat myself to a sushi lunch. The day was squelching but the food was perfect. Local friends, if you like sushi, try Sushi Mo.

Speaking of delicious foods, my best favorite and I have both been trying new things in the kitchen and I think it’s safe to say that my kitchen mojo is back.
Spinach quiche

Tomato basil soup with ricotta dumplings

Citrus-herbed back strap with Gremolata

Matcha green tea cake with green tea and lime buttercream

Served with chai tea latte ice cream. I was too impatient to let the mixture cool before churning it, so the ice cream didn’t set properly, but the taste was still superb.

Here’s to chasing dreams and catching critters.
